Sentiment is a lagging indicator - except when it's not

This page composes four independent views of market psychology: the CNN Fear & Greed composite (equity internals), the Crypto Fear & Greed Index (crypto market mood), Google search trends (retail attention), and the VIX (implied vol expectations from options markets). We aggregate them into a single level (panic -> fear -> neutral -> optimism -> euphoria), but the components are always shown individually so you can see exactly which channel is driving the read.

How to read it. In calm markets, sentiment mostly lags price - fear peaks after drawdowns, greed peaks after rallies, and reversion is the play. In crisis markets, the pattern inverts: extreme panic with plunging VIX-term-structure normalization is an early capitulation signal, and extreme euphoria with rising put-call is an early top signal. Watch for divergence between the four components - that's where the interesting reads live.

Limitations. Sentiment indices are built on a small, well-known set of underlying data. They are re-priced frequently and change their own methodologies without notice. Google Trends is coarse and laggy. None of these measures is a forecast in isolation - use sentiment as context for what the structural signals on the dashboard are doing, not as a standalone call.
